Pre-Game Chat with BSS

The BSS - Bazzett, Stevens, and Strom.  Cute huh?
Welcome to our new weekly segment, Pre-Game chat with BSS. This is where kdawg, Pete, and myself just kick back and have a casual chat about the coming game. No editing and anything goes.

bbazzett: Alright fellas lets kick this off
Kale Stevens: IOk...I get it now.  How about Pre-Game Chat with BSS?
bbazzett: Sounds good
Kale Stevens: I'm all ears
dorkfish0: I'm all eyes
Kale Stevens: lol
bbazzett: Still seams unreal to me that our Detroit Lions, our UNBEATEN Lions, are playing MNF tomorrow
Kale Stevens: Yeah man...the national spotlight.  I am loving it!!
bbazzett: I am so freakin excited. This might be the best Lions team we've seen since the 91 team I think
Kale Stevens: This to me compares to the Thanksgiving Day game, in terms of importance.  The Lions have returned to a level that is drawing national attention.  That is HUGE!
bbazzett: Alright, let's get this started. Tomorrow night, Chicago Bears at Ford Field
dorkfish0: Any word yet from Marinelli where Calvin would be on their depth chart?
bbazzett: Nice
Kale Stevens: LOL
Kale Stevens: I love the "in your face" that Staff and Megatron gave to Cris Carter.
bbazzett: Do you guys think we're going to see the same Lions team through the first four games where we were seeing a lot of sloppiness, or do you think they are ready for this?
dorkfish0: The Schwartz will have them ready.
Kale Stevens: This is a whole different ball game bro.  The Bears are nowhere near the level, defensively, that even Dallas was...let alone Minnesota.  I think the Lions are going to roll.
Kale Stevens: We will surely see some mistakes though.  Of that, I have no doubt.
dorkfish0: The Bears are going to try to ride Forte... do they even have any WRs?
bbazzett: Ok, it still bother me that they came out so flat against both the Vikes and the Cowboys, I'd like to cut down on my heartburn
bbazzett: Yeah, Roy Williams, hehehe
Kale Stevens: Jonny Knox is their only deep threat.  Hester is a threat in space.
Kale Stevens: Johnny or Jonny...isk
Kale Stevens: idk
bbazzett: Speaking of those two......
dorkfish0: Jhonny
Kale Stevens: Peralta
Kale Stevens: Damon
bbazzett: Do you think we'll see Martz try a reverse on us?
Kale Stevens: Oh...
Kale Stevens: Yes
dorkfish0: For sure
Kale Stevens: They are going to try to trick us with all kinds of Martz's little gimmicks.
dorkfish0: Wouldn't be surprised to see flea flicker, since we need to key on Forte.
bbazzett: Yeah, I think seeing other teams have success against us with reverses is going to keep teams trying
Kale Stevens: As we all know, all too well, they do not work without the right personnel.  The 5 step drops are not going to work against the Lions, especially with how bad the Chicago O-line is this year.
Kale Stevens: Cutler is going to be running for his life.
bbazzett: Like Romo?
dorkfish0: Hope he spent plenty of time the treadmill this week
bbazzett: We got surprisingly little pressure on him IMO
Kale Stevens: Tell me this guys; How big of an impact can our OLBs have in stopping Cutler from the releases to Forte, when he is under pressure?
bbazzett: You think the Bears are looking at what Dallas did offensively as a blueprint to slow down our pass rush?
dorkfish0: I agree, and it seems like he'd been seeing consistent pressur from other teams.
Kale Stevens: They do not have the personnel.
Kale Stevens: That's my point.
bbazzett: true
Kale Stevens: Dallas has better players up front.
Kale Stevens: Cutler has been sacked 14 times already...haha
bbazzett: Now let's give credit where it's due. Pepper and Melton are holding their own for Chicago
Kale Stevens: I agree, and Idonije isn't too bad either.
Kale Stevens: DeMarcus Ware?  0 sacks vs Detroit.
dorkfish0: How often did he lineup vs Backus?
bbazzett: I want to know what Linehan is going to do to prevent a repeat of last years "event"
dorkfish0: 2 TEs all game long.
Kale Stevens: Detroit's offensive line has held opponents to the 5th lowest sacks allowed.
bbazzett: Ware lined up on him and Hilliard a few times, but didn't get to Stafford
dorkfish0: That's somewhat encouraging
Kale Stevens: There is no doubt in my mind, one of the TEs is always going to have to shade Peppers in this game, on passing downs, or else Stafford will also be running for HIS life.
bbazzett: It is, and while I respect the Bears, I think there are far better teams on the schedule upcoming
dorkfish0: or , at least, his shoulder
Kale Stevens: Tell me this guys; How big of an impact can our OLBs have in stopping Cutler from the releases to Forte, when he is under pressure?
Kale Stevens: Or just to stopping Forte in general.
dorkfish0: I suspect we'll see a lot of runs early to try to slow them down too.
bbazzett: I think it all depends, I was rather pleased with Carpenter last week, and I think it might not be a bad idea to have him bird-dog Forte
dorkfish0: What's Durant's status?
bbazzett: good to go
dorkfish0: Over pursuit will need to be extremely limited.
bbazzett: He had a full practice
Kale Stevens: I believe they are the key to stopping screens and the dump passes.
dorkfish0: You can call me captain obvious
bbazzett: I agree, I think that has been a big problem for the Lions against the run so far
Kale Stevens: In the first half of the last two games for sure.
bbazzett: Ok, the defensive line philosophy has been play the run on the way to the QB.
bbazzett: I don't think that's a smart idea against Forte
Kale Stevens: That's another reason the OLBs play a key role this week.
dorkfish0: I agree, I think we match up pretty well against their wideouts. We can afford to plat run on running doens.
bbazzett: Well, if the D-Line sits back and plays read-n-react, kinda hard to get pressure that way
Kale Stevens: The defensive line is going to keep being aggressive.  It is up to the OLBs to contain Forte.
dorkfish0: This is why I'm not a coach
Kale Stevens: We have gotten into the most trouble against the run, by being overly aggressive with run blitzes.
dorkfish0: Pressure on cutler = poor decisions
bbazzett: Overall though, I'm just fine with the idea of saying, "Ok Cutler, try and find a consistent receiver to beat us with, but we're taking Forte away from you" and see what happens
Kale Stevens: The linebackers were over pursuing or getting washed out of the play completely.  Once they started playing read and react, that is when our defense really started tightening up in the last two weeks.
Kale Stevens: They stayed home and made plays.
bbazzett: I tell you, I'm very happy with Tulloch in the middle
dorkfish0: No doubt.
Kale Stevens: Agreed.  So far so good there...
Kale Stevens: How do you guys feel about Levy?
bbazzett: I think he's a borderline starter and they could be better served starting Carpenter in certain matchups
bbazzett: Is he good, yes. Outstanding, not really
bbazzett: Now, get ready for this
dorkfish0: He'll be better playing a role. The fact he was probably the LB we had last year is testament to how weak they were.
dorkfish0: best^
bbazzett: Rookie punter kicking to Hester, you're the special teams coach, what do you tell him?
bbazzett: I agree Pete
dorkfish0: punt it the !@#$ away from him'
bbazzett: LOL
Kale Stevens: I just remember how great he was in the last 4 games last year...
Kale Stevens: Levy
Kale Stevens: Anyway...definitely play keep away from Hester as much as possible.
dorkfish0: Linehan likes the screen, and we've ran it pretty well so far. Will the Bears be able to stop it?
bbazzett: Well, that was last year. Can't say he's doing bad this year, but he'[s not standing out either
bbazzett: Good question Pete
Kale Stevens: I don't think they can Pete.  I think Best is going to have a big game.
bbazzett: I think partially it depends on what side we run it to
bbazzett: BRB, going to grab some cranrasberry and cheese waffles
dorkfish0: Do we run it at Peppers, seems like that might be a bad idea.
dorkfish0: mmmmmmmmm... waffles
Kale Stevens: They definitely don't want to run it at Melton.
bbazzett: I think staying away from Briggs side is more important
Kale Stevens: I think they could beat the Bear's on Peppers' side of the field, with delays and counters...he will over pursue.
bbazzett: I agree
Kale Stevens: I agree.  Run it at Nick Roach.
bbazzett: Yep
Kale Stevens: Student body left...lol
bbazzett: Make Roach make the stop, or put him one-on-one with Best
bbazzett: lol
dorkfish0: of course, if it's too successfull it makes a little more difficult for me to beat Brad this week.
dorkfish0: but just a LITTLE
bbazzett: lol, don't think you'll have many problems there
Kale Stevens: lol
bbazzett: your turn
Kale Stevens: Linehan says the Lions are built to throw the ball.
Kale Stevens: Cue the John Madden and Pat Summerall
bbazzett: Well, no one is going to confuse Raiola with the Hogs, that's for sure
Kale Stevens: comments
dorkfish0: lol
Kale Stevens: http://www.detroitlions.com/news/article-1/Linehan-says-the-Lions-are-built-to-throw-the-ball/1c10e645-8fcc-4f7b-87c5-9a3dcd61cbef
dorkfish0: Not running the ball with a lot of success stands out more when you're 1=3 or 0=4
bbazzett: I don't know whether we are built to throw the ball out of design or because there's no other choice,k but either weay he is correct
dorkfish0: oops, not =... damn keyboard
bbazzett: way not weay
dorkfish0: curds?
bbazzett: No, cheese waffles
bbazzett: by Jays
Kale Stevens: The article I linked give great insight into what we're all about on offense.
bbazzett: cool
Kale Stevens:
“Honestly, I don’t even think about the run game," he said. "That might be a perception, but the reality is that it’s not even something we’re concerned about.
"We’re very comfortable calling the running the game the way we do it. We don’t go, ‘Oh, what was our run-pass percentage?’ We don’t even look at that. We look to see how efficient we were in all areas."
Part of the Lions effeciency in the running game comes from the work of their versatile tight end group which includes Will Heller, Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler.
Each week they're expected to not only be a part of the receiving game and pass protection, but also to do their part in run blocking when the game plan calls for it.
“We always plan on helping out Jeff and (Gosder) as much as we can from the backfield,”
Kale Stevens: said Heller. “When we’ve needed the run, we’ve gone to it, but when you have weapons like we do in the passing game, it’s hard not to utilize them.
“Sometimes your total yardage might not be the highest, but when we've needed it, and when we've gone to it, it has been effective. The bottom line is putting points on the scoreboard, however you have to do it.”
bbazzett: I have to agree with his approach
dorkfish0: I agree with that, Jhavid had some decent runs in the 2nd half last week. 5-6 yard
Kale Stevens: Running back Jahvid Best, who leads the Lions’ in rushing yards (190) and carries (60), also defines efficiency in relation to what the offense needs to accomplish.
If he's able to get a 4-yard run that sets up a 20-yard passing score, that's effective.
“We don’t want any negative plays, we don’t want any turnovers or anything like that,” said Best. “We just want to get positive yards every time we get the ball.”
There are obviously still elements of the run game that need to be improved on, but it's something that will come along and part of that will be determined by coming out in games faster and being able to score sooner.
"We haven’t not tried to run," said Linehan. "When we’re down by two or three (scores), we’re not going to run the ball as much there, but we’re also not going
bbazzett: That being said, it would be nice if they can establish some more on the ground against the Bears, who have a weak run D
dorkfish0: Experts like to say "you have to be able to run in the playoff push." Pretty sure the Colts won it all with a less that stellar running game.
Kale Stevens: run the ball as much there, but we’re also not going to abandon it.
"You’re not going to win or lose a game by not running the ball. I think that it all balances out as we go. Our goal is to be efficient on offense and to be explosive on offense - run or pass.”
bbazzett: I lookj at it in terms of protecting Stafford.
Kale Stevens: I agree Pete.  Use the pass to set up the run.\
dorkfish0: Yes, i think we can run it on them.
bbazzett: The more we can keep them on their heels, the less they blitz, the less hits he takes
bbazzett: I appreciate and I like Hill and Stanton, but I like them best holding clipboards
dorkfish0: AGREED!
Kale Stevens: Agreed.  It will make a big difference if Best can keep the LBs on their heels.
Kale Stevens: Agree with that 100% too.  Keep Stafford healthy!
bbazzett: Allright guys, can you think of anything else?
dorkfish0: Score predictions?
bbazzett: 42-20 Lions
Kale Stevens: 37-20 Lions
dorkfish0: wow, i'm alittle more conservative, 31-20
dorkfish0: but i';; take 70-0
dorkfish0: lol
Kale Stevens: We all agree on 20 for Chicago...wow.
Kale Stevens: Me too Pete...lol!
bbazzett: Lol, nice
dorkfish0: that is an  apocalyptic-esque sign
Kale Stevens: lmao...i''ayieayieiiiiii!
bbazzett: No, Lions at 16-0 would be that
dorkfish0: damn keyboard
dorkfish0: lol
dorkfish0: true dat
bbazzett: Watch out for the Kurdish devilman key
bbazzett: I hear it's a new feature on auto-correcty\
dorkfish0: Then the plane will crash on their way back from GB...
Kale Stevens: lol
bbazzett: curse my fat fingers
dorkfish0: lol
bbazzett: allright bro's I think it's time to hit the "Wrap it up" Box
dorkfish0: sounds good
Kale Stevens: Good chat.  I'm sure we'll be talking during the game...
bbazzett: Oh yeah
bbazzett: I'm Brad Bazzett
Kale Stevens: I'm Kale Stevens
dorkfish0: I'm Slim Shady
dorkfish0: wait
dorkfish0: Pete Strom
bbazzett: and that's a wrap.
Kale Stevens: #BSS
bbazzett: Thanks for joining us, see ya next week
