As you can see, this differs greatly from the early Wednesday report.  It also shows us, in definite fashion, who will NOT be playing on Sunday.  For the Cowboys, that list includes Miles Austin, David Buehler, Derrick Dockery, Jason Hatcher, and Orlando Scandrick, while Dez Bryant, Tony Romo, and Tony Flammetta are all questionable.  I imagine Romo and Bryant will give it a go, but it is good news for the Lions that Miles Austin will not play.  That is one less weapon Romo will have at his disposal on Sunday.

The bad news for the Lions is that Justin Durant has been ruled out of this game as well.  Bobby Carpenter will likely get the nod in his abscence, and Carp has done a great job for us in both rotational situations this season, and as a starter last season.  I do not worry about any significant difference in performance between him and Durant this week, but of course I would have liked to see Durant play.  Amari Spievey and Eric Wright are also questionable, and if they are unable to play it will raise some concern.  Spievey's backup is Erik Coleman, and I'm not too sure Coleman can adequately replace Spievey.  Eric Wright's backup is Aaron Berry, but Berry is banged up as well. The rest of our players that are out this week are either backups or special teamers, so there should be no significant change there.  Aaron Berry is questionable, and if he and Wright both are unable to go, then it will most likely be Brandon McDonald.  Could we see Alphonso Smith this week?

The Weekend Spotlight - Week 4 Edition, 2011

With a healthy Matthew Stafford, a Lion VICTORY is always within reach!

Hello again ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the week 4 edition of the Weekend Spotlight! I am your host, KDawg.  This installment of your weekly WS has the Detroit Lions facing the Dallas Cowboys, on the road in Dallas, TX, at Cowboys Stadium.  Coming off of a huge come from behind victory in OT, versus the Vikings last week, the Lions have now won their first 3 games of the season!  I would be lying if I said that I was not extremely happy and excited for our team, but I am not quite so satisfied that I am over confident.  However, I think the Lions HAVE already made a big statement to the league, and it said "We ARE for real!"  That said, I am geeked up for the game this week and believing that the Lions could take their record to 4-0.  With 3 weeks of the season under our belts, I will once again reveal to you who I believe the key players will be, on the Lion's offense and defense, for another Lion VICTORY!  As usual, I will provide you with the logic behind the reasoning for my picks, including stats and a prediction at the end.  The Cowboys may actually be the toughest team we have faced so far, as I believe that their offense is far superior to any team we have faced to this point, and their defense is just as good as Minnesota's (if not better) and they do not fade away in the second half like the Vikings.  Regardless, VICTORY can still be ours, and I will tell you why and how as the WS W4E begins...after the jump.

Breaking down the Cowboys - Week 4

On offense – The key to unraveling the Cowboys lies in attacking their young offensive line, and luckily the Detroit Lions are well equipped to do just that. With two rookies, a second year center, and retread guard Kyle Kosier, the Cowboys offensive line is the primary culprit for the dinged up Tony Romo. When Romo has time in the pocket, he is as deadly a gunslinger as they come, and can pick apart even the best coverage schemes. When mobile after getting flushed from the pocket, he is nearly as accurate on the run as in the pocket. Given his broken rib though, his mobility is limited, as displayed against the Redskins on Monday night. Jason Witten provides extreme matchup problems for any defense, and the Lions are no exception. Most linebackers and safeties that are big enough to keep up with him, are usually too small to be effective in covering his large frame, and most linebackers and defensive ends that are large enough to body him around physically, are too slow to keep up with his precision route running. Wide receiver Dez Bryant may be as talented as they come, but he too is limited by a quadriceps injury. On the other side, Miles Austin is expected to miss the game against the Lions with a bum hamstring, leaving the Cowboys with an assortment of bumbling underachievers at wide receiver. Several times on Monday night, Romo had to take time to be a receivers coach during the game and show these guys where to line up, and even that didn’t guarantee them running the correct route. When running the ball, the Cowboys are well below average, but they are persistent, and they don’t abandon the run even late in the game. Felix Jones is a much better running back than people give him credit for. He has bulked up over the past year and is unafraid to run between the tackles, something he displayed in the past, even running with a separated shoulder as he is now. Even though he is bigger, he has tremendous burst and ability to bounce it outside if he sees an opportunity. Jones is a very real threat to take it to the house every time he hits a hole, which is seldom, due to the young offensive lines inept run blocking.

Lions on Defense – Expect the Lions to push the issue up front, literally. Their defensive line will have the opportunity to get after Romo, and they have the talent to go on a feeding frenzy Sunday. Expect the Cowboys to try and slow things down with screens, quick hitters, and maybe even a reverse. If Romo get even a little time, expect him to look for Witten first, often, and ready to pull the trigger. Expect the Lions to try a combination of linebackers, Delmas, and even Avril in covering Witten until they find something that works. Expect Dez Bryant to receive special attention from the secondary, and for those playing in the off coverage to pay strict attention to their assignments, as that may be their best chance to get an INT as the receiver runs off on a wrong route. The key matchup here is going to be Vanden Bosch versus Doug Free, if Kyle can force the issue and keep Witten home, expect the rest of the D-Line to tee off asnd send Romo to the hospital.

Defense – One thing you can take to the bank, no Ryan defense will ever lack for blitz schemes. Rob Ryan’s is no exception. His defense is both stout against the run and aggressive at getting after the Quarterback. Up front, this no-name defensive line is very good at holding the point of attack and funneling any open holes toward their waiting linebackers. The linebacking corps isn’t great, but it is fast. DeMarcus Ware, in many ways, presents more of a challenge than Jared Allen did last week. Ware routinely moves around in the defense, and has the freedom to choose the weakest link on the offensive line as his point of attack on all obvious passing downs. The result is his sack numbers are through the roof. Sean Lee, in the middle, has outstanding straight line speed, but definitely is not fluid in transition and looks downright slow when having to turn and chase until he gets back to speed again. Marcus Spears made a late appearance for the Cowboys and looks poised to re-emerge as an alternate sack threat. The Cowboys secondary could be vulnerable this week. Both starting corners, Newman and Jenkins, left the game on Monday night at various points with nagging injuries and it remains to be seen what their status will be for the coming week. Both could have their hands full, even at full speed, with our receivers.

Lions on Offense – Expect Stafford to get sacked a couple of times in this game. It is going to happen. You can expect about 5-10 matchups of Ware on Backus one-on-one, and Ware on Cherilus/Hilliard one-on-one throughout the game. He’ll get through a couple of times, but as long as Stafford bounces back up, it won’t be the end of the world and just needs to be part of the game that the Lions will have to deal with. Expect Linehan to call 10-12 token rushing plays, but don’t expect more than twenty yards rushing for the game. Expect a few screens and quick hitters to Burleson to keep the Cowboys from getting too aggressive. The Lions can really make the Cowboys pay, when they have the time, by working Scheffler in the twenty five yard middle range of the field, and on almost any pass thrown in Calvin Johnson’s direction. Expect to see a lot of Maurice Morris in this game to try and pick up blitzes, and don’t expect them to try to get extravagant at keeping Pettigrew in to block, as Ware will just line up where he isn’t anyways.
Special teams – The Lions could have a real advantage here. Cowboys kick off specialist David Buehler is injured, and rookie field goal specialist Bailey doesn’t have the strongest leg to reach the end zone on most kicks. For the first time this season, return man extraordinaire Stefan Logan should be turned loose.

Overall, this is a very winnable game for the Lions, but expect the Cowboys to keep it close.
Final Score prediction : Lions 27 – Cowboys 26

The Weekend Spotlight - Week 3 Edition, 2011 - Follow Up Post #1

Calvin Johnson makes one of his spectacular catches of the game, in Overtime of the Lions vs Vikings game, which set up the game winning FG by Jason "Money" Hanson!

Let me just start off by saying that you can't possibly win them all.  The intent of this post will be to revisit my pre-game predictions and comments, prior to the Lions vs Vikings game yesterday.  I will try my best to do a follow up post like this, each week.  I am very happy to report that, yesterday, the Vikings reminded me a LOT of the 2010 Detroit Lions.  They had a 20 point lead going into the half, and they had completely dominated the Lions for half of the game.  However, as we all know, the Lions mounted a huge comeback and won the game in OT, on a MONEY Hanson game winning field goal!

If you will all recall week 9 of last season, for example, the Lions had a 10 point lead on the New York Jets, with 4:18 left in the 4th quarter.  The Jets came back and tied the game, late in the 4th, sending the game to OT, where they won the toss and elected to receive.  They went on to defeat the Lions 23-20, by a game winning FG on their very first drive in OT.  That is just one example, as the Lions had other games where they collapsed in the 2nd half last year as well, but this example happens to fit perfectly in this case.  The Lions are now 3-0, for the first time since 1980, on the season, and they seem to be gaining momentum.  Yes, there are many areas that the Lions need to improve on if they hope to defeat a lot of the teams that they are still to face this year, but one major improvement that we all should take notice of, is the fact that THESE Lions NEVER quit, and they have the moxy and endurance to play a full 60 minutes in EVERY game.

I BELIEVE that the Lions can beat any team they have left on their schedule, especially with a healthy Matthew Stafford, who was nothing short of AWESOME yesterday, at the helm.  That said, I am here to recap my weekly post and talk about the things that I predicted before the game, so without further adieu, I present you with the follow-up to my WS W3E, which begins after the jump...

Jim Schwartz and his signature fist pump...with expletives!

I wanted to post this video clip, not only because I love the fire of the Lion's head coach, but also because I think this is just too damn funny to not keep!

Postgame Pulse

Ok, I'm going to say it - I told you so.
A one on one matchup between Backus and Jared Allen is an extreme mismatch in favor of Allen. As most of you got the opportunity to see today, Jeff Backus is quite simply not quick enough to handle a speed rush by the leagues top pass rushers without help. Far too often, Backus was put in this matchup today, and Matt Stafford paid the price.
One of the primary reasons the Lions won the game today was due to the Vikings mis-management of their opportunities. As I feared, early in the game the Vikings and Adrian Peterson exposed the Lions mystifying and ongoing weakness versus the run. The worst thing the Vikings did today was getting away from the run. Just when they were running downhill on the Lions D, they suddenly decided to go to the air with the marginally accurate McNabb.
The Vikings certainly had their opportunities today. Perhaps one lesson Vikings head coach Leslie Frasier can take from today is this - You are the head coach, and paid to make the decisions for the team, if it was as easy as listening to what the players wanted to do, they wouldn't need you. On 4th and 1 in the fourth quarter, Frasier sent Ryan Longwell out to kick a field goal that would have put the Vikings up 23-17. Instead, after emphatic waving off the field by Adrian Peterson, Frasier caved and decided to go for it. The Lions stuffed it, took possession, and marched down the field for a game-tying field goal.
I'm absolutely thrilled that the Lions are 3-0 for the first time since 1980, but it is clear to see that this team still has a great deal more to work on throughout the season if they hope to truly take the next step. It's nice that we can play competitively with contending teams and have a fair expectation of winning the game, but this team truly has the capability of so much more. This team truly has championship caliber talent, but they have to play a cleaner game in order to achieve their potential.

Lions win thriller in OT 26-23

The Detroit Lions looked like they were down for the count after ending the first half down 20-0. After scoring 23 unanswered points in the second half, they looked unbeatable. It was after the Vikings tied it at twenty-three that you saw the mettle of this team shine through. Facing 3rd and 27 on their own three yard line with 1:01 left to play, the Lions played it smart, ran the ball for no gain, and got the clock moving on a Vikings team with no timeouts.
By the time the Vikings got the ball back, they had only eleven seconds left on their own 40 yard line. With the ensuing hook and lateral play petering out, the game went to overtime. The Lions won the toss and elected to receive. A critical seventeen yard reception by Titus Young, and a massive bomb from Stafford to Calvin Johnson, put the ball down on the seventeen yard line, where head coach Jim Schwartz never hesitated before sending Jason Hanson on to kick the game winner.
The Lions move to 3-0 for the first time in 31 years.

Nick Fairley is practicing!!

In breaking news this morning, the Detroit Lions have announced that rookie DT Nick Fairley has returned to practice.
For the first time since week one of training camp, defensive tackle  Nick Fairley participated in practice, on the field for defensive line individual drills."It's the first step," said Head Coach Jim Schwartz after practice. "(He's) still got a long way to go, but there's steps along the way and this is one of them."
Fairley has done as much as he has been able to do both in the weight room and in the classroom, but getting back on the field is something Schwartz considers a big step.
"He'd been doing a lot of stuff on the side and doing a lot of lifting and conditioning," he said. "Actually putting a helmet back on - he doesn't even have any stickers on his helmet (yet).

"It's just part of the process."
 http://www.detroitlions.com/news/article-1/Fairley-returns-to-practice/b412ba40-fb60-4853-951d-57a755355266

This is excellent news for the Lions, who surely could use the extra muscle up front.  However, it is early in Fairley's recovery, so we shouldn't get too excited just yet.  I expect to see Fairley on the field within the next couple of weeks though, so there is something to look forward to!  GO LIONS!

Harvin held out of Practice Thursday

The news keeps getting better for the Lions.

The Weekend Spotlight - Week 3 Edition, 2011

Greetings ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the first edition of the NEW Weekend Spotlight for week 3 of the 2011 NFL season! I am your host, KDawg. Since this is the first installment of my new series, and since this is an entirely different venue than before, I will start by giving all of you a short background on what this series is all about. Every week from here through the end of the season, I am going to write a post to discuss key players for the Lions in their Sunday matchups. Just to give you guys a taste of what I will bring all season long, this week’s edition of the WS will examine a couple of key offensive and defensive players, who I feel will have a major impact on the upcoming game between the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings. I will name them, explain why I feel they are going to be key to the efforts of their team this week, and offer some subjective analysis as my reasoning. You can begin reading all of this, after the jump.

Kevin Williams to rejoin Vikings D-Line for Lions game

While this is simply not good news, the silver lining is the highly disruptive DT is still nursing a bum foot and may have an axe to grind, as he will not be getting paid for the next two games due to the NFL disciplinary action. This does take alot of pressure off of Jared Allen to BE the entire Vikings D-Line though.

Week 1 - The Stafford/Johnson Connection (Highlights)

Next on the Lions Menu

This week the Lions travel to Minnesota to play the Vikings in the Hubert Humphrey Metro Dome. While the Lions have been firing on all cylinders to start the season, the Motor City Kitties purrfect record could be in jeopardy against a tough division rival that is still finding its chemistry under the leadership of Donovan "Prince" McNabb.

The Vikings offense features a dangerous one-two punch on the ground with Adrian Peterson and unheralded Toby Gerhardt. This could give the Lions fits, as they have allowed several unexpected running lanes through their vaunted defensive line to open the season. This could be a costly mistake against a back as dangerous as Peterson, a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball.

In the passing game, McNabb has limited ability to cause damage. Percy Harvin, the only true receiving threat on the Vikings, will surely gain plenty of attention from a Lions secondary that has exceeded expectations. Holdover TE Visanthe Shiancoe, a favorite target of former QB Brett Favre, has disappeared in the new Vikings scheme.

The Lions true test though will come on offense, and features our PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Matchup of the Week.

Ladies and Gentleman, in this corner we have 11 year veteran starting Left Tackle Jeff Backus, and in the other corner, we have the every down potential QB Killer, Defensive End Jared Allen! Let's get ready to RUUMMMMBBBLLLLEEEE!!!!

Allen can wreak havoc in the Lions backfield, and has the potential to put Stafford, or any other QB for that matter, on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Expect the Lions to consistently shade TE Pettigrew to Backus's side of the field to give help when needed before leaking out to a shallow route in the flats while fellow TE Tony Scheffler tries working deeper seam routes in the mid-range of the field. If the Lions can neutralize the presence of Allen effectively, this game should be theirs hands down.

Final score prediction - Lions 31 Vikings 16

The NEW home of the WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT!

Ladies and gentlemen, as you may or may not be aware I wrote a series on another blog site last season, entitled "The Weekend Spotlight".  Each week I would break down the Lion's matchups and predict a winner, based on stats, current and past performances vs that team, and my overall gut feeling.  Now that I have a new blog, I will bring that same series here, starting this week!  I will do my best to have each week's "episode", posted for you, by Thursday afternoon for the rest of the season!  I hope you enjoy it, and GO LIONS!!
